Who is your favorite female role model from history and why?
My favorite female role model is actually a combination of two women that I studied simultaneously, which is Diahann Carroll and Mary Kay Ash. The reason for this is I love Diahann Carroll Carroll's elegance and grace and I love the fact that Mary Kay decided to say "I'm going to be a woman and do business as a woman and I don't have to conform to a man's world in order to be successful."
What's the most empowering quote by a woman that motivates you daily?
A fun piece of advice that one of my influential mentors gave me is always wear matching underwear. Yes! Make sure your panty and bras match when you go out into the world it makes you feel sensual, sexy and there’s a different level of confidence that you get when you know you have on matching underwear. And she also says make sure you wear a girdle. Suck it in and push it out!
If you could have dinner with three influential women, living or deceased, who would you choose and what would you ask them?
If I could sit down with three influential women, number one would be my grandmother. She passed away in 2012 and her nickname was actually Glamour. She taught us that a lady is supposed to always have a red lip. And I would ask her more about her past and her childhood because I didn’t get to really ask her those questions and I would love to know how she rose up out of the ashes of McComb Mississippi, and became a principal as well as a school teacher. Number two would be Diahann Carroll. Based on her background, I would like to know what made her believe that she deserved the best that she deserved luxury that she deserved everything wonderful coming into her life. And number three would be of course Mary Kay Ash. During that time - and I look back at one of her interviews back in 1979 she was making 100 million dollars - 100 million, but she was doing business as a woman, and I would love to pick her brain on all of the business savvy that she gained during that time.
If you had to create a women's empowerment playlist, which songs would definitely be on it?
If I created a woman’s empowerment playlist these three songs would definitely have to be on there. Number one Whitney Houston’s - One of Those Days, which is one of my favorites. Number two would be Christina Aguilera - Loving Me for Me. And number three would be She Ready by Avari.
If you could travel back in time and give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could travel back in time and give myself a piece of advice it would be alignment. Everything that you’re looking for and desire in your life, requires a different version of you. Which means you have to be in alignment with that. There’s nothing new under the sun, everything that you were destined to do just requires you to align with it. You’re not waiting on anything. You’re not waiting on someone to give you permission. It’s already in you. Everything that your heart’s desire requires you to step up as a woman and decide I’m going to align what the life and the woman that I need to be to get the desires of my heart, so that would be my advice to myself. Get in alignment.
Can you share a memorable and empowering moment from your personal life or career that made you proud to be a woman?
I remember this one empowering moment that made me so excited to be a woman. I had to go into a room full of high powered, high ego men to get a contract signed - and I remember I was told that I had to go in there and be hard-nosed, I had to go in there and be assertive and I had to be stern and let them know that I mean business, but I decided to do something different. I decided to show up in my feminine, and I tell you the way that it was so easy for me to function for me to be able to present the information and still have confidence in knowing that I know what I’m talking about to the point that, the men wrote to check at the end of the meeting. One of their staff came by and said “come here I got to ask you, what was it that caused you to be able to get them to give you a check? They don’t write anyone a check.” I said the learned how to stroke their ego and gut punch em at the same time!
Share a fun or empowering piece of advice you received from an influential woman in your life.
The most empowering quote that I use and believe and walk in daily is “Love yourself first and the rest will follow” by the Lucille Ball.
What advice would you give to young women who are just starting their careers?
A piece of advice to a young woman entering her career or starting a business, would be become what I call a feminine CEO. That’s a woman in business, not a business woman and also it’s a woman whose business is around her lifestyle not her lifestyle around her business. I believe that when we do business from our feminine space, we get a lot further and we put less wear and tear on our bodies. If you look at women’s health, the health issues have skyrocketed since the 1950s and I believe it’s because we’ve entered to work the workforce in a man’s energy, doing it the way you were taught to do it and that’s how men do it. Men can take a high level of stress - we cannot and we are killing our bodies trying to go for the gold climb the corporate ladder and meet all of our aspirations and we could do that - just do it in the feminine CEO way.
What does International Women's Day mean to you personally, and how do you celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in your everyday life?
For me, international women’s day is a remarkable day to celebrate the achievements, and the growth and the evolution of women, our rights, and all that we have accomplished. We have come so far as women and I’m looking forward to seeing what we do for the next generation.
White shirts can be dressed up or down, making them suitable for various occasions. How do you style a white shirt to reflect your personality and make a fashion statement?
My white shirts will always reflect my personality because you will see them in two ways - either the collar all the way up - I LOVE big collars or like right now off the shoulder. (Wearing the Vimera blouse) This is dainty, it feels elegant. It feels soft. It feels feminine. It just feels like all girl and THAT is what my personality reflects - class, classic, classy at all times.
