Typically characterized as a cotton top with blue sailor-like stripes, the style was introduced in 1858 as the uniform for the French navy, possess any serous fashion cache until it was brought into the fashion mainstream in 1917. The main inspiration? Sailors’ uniforms see on a trip to the French Coast. The French Navy had been wearing the style since 1858.
The Breton stripe has since been a staple of many women’s wardrobes, and it suits pretty much every occasion and style. This season Designer Anne Fontaine wanted to bring her own vision to the stripe piece by adding her signature touches of femininity and allure.
As far as basics go, the Breton striped shirt is as necessary as a black blazer or a pair of dark-wash skinny jeans, and like those staples, the allure of the Breton stripe shirt lies in its versatility.
